Sunday School & Bible ClassJANUARY NEWSLETTER:
A CLOSER LOOK AT 9TH AND 10TH GRADE
The tenth grade class is the smallest class in church right now. Our tenth graders are: Alyssa Crynock, Erin Huenink, and Jessica Bruggink. These three tenth graders are joined by the ninth graders: Brandon Jentink, David Dolfin, Jolene Mentink, Mallory Kaat, Melanie Mullikin and Rob DeGroff for both Sunday School and Bible Class.
Ninth and Tenth grade Sunday School is taught by Todd and Laura Dolfin. They are using the Faith Weavers curriculum on Sunday morning. This year they are covering:
Israelites cross Red Sea; God sends quail and manna; God provides water; God gives 10 commandments; Israelites worship golden calf; Israelites build the tabernacle; Moses sends spies into the promised land; Balaam’s donkey talks; Joshua becomes the leader of the Israelites; Joshua sends spies to Jericho; Israelites cross the Jordan River; God gives victory over Jericho.
Zachariah prophesies about Jesus; John prepares people for Jesus; Son of God is born; Jesus grows up; Word becomes flesh; Satan tempt Jesus; Jesus per- forms His first miracle; Jesus teaches in the synagogue; Hometown rejection; Fishermen’s miraculous catch; Jesus teaches about loving enemies; Jesus teaches Good Fruit.
Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus; Zacchaeus; Jesus tells parable of Lost Son; Jesus washes disciple’s feet; Jesus is tried and crucified; Jesus appears to Mary, Apostles defend their faith; Saul meets Jesus near Damascus; Peter rises Tabitha from the dead; Angel frees Peter from jail; Lydia is converted; Jailer Believes; Paul describes living by the Spirit.
These stories are the same as 1 – 5th have on Wednesday nights and 7 – 12th have on Sunday mornings. The exciting thing about the program is that families can discuss the stories together at all age levels.
Wednesday nights, this class is taught by John Navis. They are learning the language and basic truths of the Christian faith within the Reformed tradition through a devotional style curriculum which covers the Heidelberg Catechism.
Please keep these two classes and their teachers in your prayers this month. Some of the stories they have had many times before, however, God’s word is never boring. May they see God in a new and exciting way each and everyday!

From Ken Davis:
A little boy stood up front with his parents during the baptism of his little brother. After church was finished the little boy rode home in the back seat of his parent’s car and cried all the way. His mother finally asked him – “Honey –What’s the matter?” He responded, “Well, Pastor said he wanted me and my brother to live in a Christian Home – and I want to stay with you guys!”.
We laugh at this funny joke, but do your kids know that your home, above all else, is a “Christian Home”, talk about it – make sure they know who is number #1 at your house!
Six year old Angie, and her four-year old brother, Joel, were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had had enough. “You’re not supposed to talk out loud in church.” “Why? Who’s going to stop me?” Joel asked.
Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, “see those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.”
A ten-year old, under the tutelage of her grandmother, was becoming quite knowledgeable about the Bible. Then, one day, she floored her grandmother by asking, “Which Virgin was the mother of Jesus? The virgin Mary or the King James Virgin?”
Give me a sense of humor, Lord, Give me the grace to see a joke, to get some humor out of life, and pass it on to other folks.

The third graders are required to learn 3 different passages by the end of Sunday School. Psalm 23 The Great Commission: Matthew 28: 19-20 Romans 3: 23-24 What great verses to remind us that God is with us all the time and that He loved us so much that through His grace we have redemption. What a wonderful gift to tell others about. How about taking the 3rd grade challenge? If you don’t know these verses by memory, take this next month to learn one or all three of the verses along with the third graders. When you see any of these students, maybe you can ask them to say a verse with you. What a great shepherd we have!!!
A CLOSER LOOK AT 1ST GRADE First Grade means big and exciting changes for kids at Hingham Reformed Church. This year’s first graders are: Brett Mullikin, Hannah Harmeling, Isabelle Krueger, Paige Bruggink, Smantha Baake, Samantha Kanz, Taylor Oonk and Wolfy Schwartz.
These first graders are now the “Big Kids” during the Sunday School singing time. They have the important role of leading the 3 year olds – Kindergartners. Their singing experience doesn’t stop there…now they get to be a part of the Junior Choir, too. This is also their first year of Bible Class on Wednesday nights. The first graders have Mrs. Tina Kaat for Sunday School. Their Bible Class teachers are Mrs. Kris Mentink and Mrs Nancy DeJong. The first graders, along with the second graders are learning the great stories about Jesus from the New Testament during Sunday School.
When you see these first graders around church, let them know how much you appreciated their smiling faces in the Junior Choir when they sang. It’s wonderful to have our children helping us in praising the Lord on Sunday mornings.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE 3 YEAR OLDS
For many it seems like yesterday that these 3 year olds were baptized and we made a commitment as a church to help their parents bring these Children of God up in His Way. September 10th was their big day to begin singing and Sunday School with the “big kids”. The 3 year olds are taught by Mrs. Brenda Mentink. Each week they hear a storybook based on a story from the Bible and then do a follow-up activity or two.
The 3 year olds attending Sunday School this year are: Eric Baake, Isabel Kolste, Kelsie Dulmes, Kyle Dolfin, Levi Dulmes, Maggie Kolste, Rachel Hansen, Rachel Stokdyk, and Victor Schwartz.
If you see these excited 3 year olds taking off for their classroom after church on Sunday encourage them in their love of God and Sunday School. |
